The consultation

In bowel related conditions, the patients account of symptoms is very important in helping to establish a diagnosis. Most of the consulation will involve taking a careful record of the timing and pattern of symptoms. This will usually be followed be an examination of the chest and abdomen and a recomendation for either further investigation or treatment. A new patient appointment will usually take 40minutes.    


Endoscopic procedures are provided at the Somerset Nuffield or Musgrove Park Hospitals and include:


  • Gastroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Capsule endoscopy
  • ERCP 




The following x-ray procedures and scans may be required to investigate gastrointestinal symptoms and can be arranged at the Somerset Nuffield Hospital or Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton:

  • Ultrasound scan
  • Barium meal and follow through
  • CT scan, including virtual colonoscopy
  • MRI scan and MRCP
  • PET CT scan
  • Bone density scan
  • Percutaneous biopsy including liver biopsy
  • PTC and biliary drainage
  • 24 hour oesophageal pH monitoring and oesophageal manometry
  • Breath tests –lactose intolerance, bacterial overgrowth, Helicobacter pylori



I liase closely with surgical colleagues who can provide the following procedures if required:

  • Peri-anal fistula
  • Colectomy
  • Construction of ileo-anal pouch following colectomy
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration
  • Hiatus hernia surgery including laparoscopic (Nissen’s) fundoplication
  • Laparoscopic (Heller’s) myotomy
  • Laparoscopic colorectal surgery including treatment of polyps and cancer
